Religious leaders under the National Council of Churches of Kenya on Wednesday supported constitutional amendments that are focused on people and

not politics.

NCCK Chairperson Archbishop Timothy Ndambuki said in a statement the amendments should be aimed at enhancing justice, national cohesion, accountability and national prosperity.

The said the referendum should not be a political process since politics always divides people.

“The amendments should produce a better government by advancing inclusion and sharing of power as well as addressing the disillusionment occasioned by the winner-takes-all framework, ”reads part of the statement.

The NCCK Executive Committee that met on Tuesday and Wednesday at Jumuia Conference and Country Home, Limuru, to reflect on matters of national concern has presented a draft Constitution Amendment Bill for consideration by Kenyans.

The church leaders want 33 articles in the 2010 Constitution revised.

In their draft Constitution, they seek to provide equality of all religions by ensuring that each can establish their own courts, promote the independence of the Judiciary and ensure that county assemblies serve their full term.

They also want

the positions of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Ministers included.

The Executive Committee is also concerned that political leaders could be plotting

to manipulate the national census that will be conducted in August 2019.

Therefore, they asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to charge any person having such plans.
