Tension is high in Kabarnet town, Baringo county after residents spotted unidentified civilian armed with an AK-47 gun on Monday evening.

According to witnesses, the man was seen minutes past 6 pm walking with the rifle around the car-wash near Kaptimbor along Kabarnet-Iten-Eldoret highway.

"When we saw him he walked faster towards Kapkokorwo village then we informed Police who rushed immediately to the scene to pursue him" Gilbert Cherogony, a boda boda trader said.

Cherogony said they feared following the armed stranger, "so we just watched him escape to the bush."

Kabarnet Police boss Major Reuben Chemwetich said they are yet to confirm the incident.

"We are currently working on the tip-offs to pursue the suspect although it is still early to confirm whether he is one of our police officers or a mere civilian" Chemwetich said.

However, residents fear it could be an armed bandit on the loose from the volatile neighbouring sub county.

This is after five people including four school children were shot dead in Arabal, Baringo South last Thursday.
