Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has promised support for the Cuban doctors in his county and dismissed reports that they will get special treatment.

The Governor said the three doctors, who specialise in family matters, eye surgeries and the digestive system, were shown the facilities in which they will wok.

They are expected to begin offering their services immediately.

Ophthalmologist

Margenis Artilez and Gastroenterologist Lilian Fernandez will operate from

Coast General Hospital while specialised family doctor Damisela Valdes will be based at Mlaleo Hospital.

Speaking in his office after receiving the three on Thursday, Joho said reports that they will live in

fully furnished and secured apartments were a "non-issue".

“They will stay in the same facilities as local doctors ... but where they stay or eat does not matter. What matters is improvement in our health sector," he said, noting the medics will learn from each other.

He added: “They are ready to learn the local Swahili language and work for the people. I have already introduced them to ugali, which is Kenya’s staple food. We hope they will find it sumptuous."

Artilez, the lead doctor in Mombasa, said: "We are here for work. Everyone of us is ready."
