More than 3,000 students of Kitale National Polytechnic demonstrated on Wednesday against disputed elections held last Thursday.
The students complained that the administration released a notice on Tuesday showing that the vote had been cancelled, denying them their democratic right.
They claimed that James Mukaisi was duly elected the student leader, with over 750 votes, but that the administration was keen on appointing Wycliffee Odhiambo who had 500.
The students protested in the institution but were dispersed by police officers who lobbed tear gas canisters at them.

They then took to the streets of Kitale town before camping at the gate of Governor Patrick Khaemba's office and requesting his intervention.
It is alleged that the Institution's principal fled before the students went on the rampage.
Mukais, who led the students in the protests, said they will stand up for the rights.
“The majority have decided whom they want as their leader. Why should the administration interfere with the choice of thousands of students?"

Trans Nzoia West OCPD Jackson Mwenga said police went to the scene to prevent the destruction of property.
“We have beefed up security to ensure that no public property is destroyed,” he said, and warned that vandals would be punished.
