Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed

by fire in Makutano town and Mjini slum, Meru county.

while at Mjini slum, 24 families were left homeless

including 12 business premises.

Governor Kiraitu Murungi has asked the police to speed up investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

A victim of the fire told the Star that they suspect a gas cylinder that was left lit by a drank woman may have caused the tragedy at Makutano.

At Mjini slums, the fie is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault.

"I ask the police to do through investigations to know the real cause of the fire. If it is arsonists, let them be arrested so that they no longer disturb us," Kiraitu said.

The county boss expressed his sympathy to the 41 families when he donated Sh400,000 to the affected

families.

He also gave 60 bags of maize and 40 bags of beans on Monday.

Accompanied by his Deputy, Titus Ntuchiu, area MP Rahim Dawood and area MCA Elias Murega, they also asked residents to demolish any building that has been built on the road reserves that hinder fire extinguishers accessibility.

The Kenya Red Cross Society led by the county coordinator, Kendi Gikunda offered blankets, kitchen utensils, foodstuff and other personal effects to the victims.

Imenti North deputy county commissioner Jim Njoka said most of the emergency tragedies are brought about by human errors.
