Suspected al Shabaab militants on Saturday attacked and destroyed a communication mast in Kutulo area, Wajir county paralysing communication in the area.

The unknown number of gunmen are said to have used a Rocket Propelled Grenades to attack the Safaricom mast before engaging four officers who were manning the premises in a gunfight.

Wajir police boss Stephen Ngetich said none of the officers was injured adding that all of them have been accounted for.

"The overpowered attackers escaped into a nearby forest," Ngetich said.

The incident came five days after the gang raided Elwak area, Mandera County and killed five security personnel.

More security personnel were sent to the area after the attack on January 2.

The killings happened along the Elwak-Kotulo road and the attackers also burnt a police lorry while several officers were injured in the ambush.
