Moi University has been named the best in Kenya by an international organization of researchers in their latest ranking of universities in the Africa.

This comes amid a row over the Vice Chancellor position at the university

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities has placed the university at position 19 in Africa making it the top-ranked in Kenya.

Egerton University is second and 23rd in Africa.

The University of Capetown leads in Africa.

Kenyatta University is 3rd in Kenya at position 51 in the continent while JKUAT is fourth but at position 67 in Africa.

Maseno University is 5th at position 112 in Africa.

The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions.

Since 2004 and every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) for the providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact.

“We are pleased with the latest ranking which indicates that our team is progressing well to make Moi University a world-class learning institution”, said the university public relations officer Nyongesa Wandera.

It’s the first time the university has been ranked highly by the researchers.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Laban Ayiro has worked to transform the institution within the last one year reviving it from financial and operational challenges.

CS for Education Fred Matiangi is expected to name a new VC for the university but the process had been delayed by a row over interviews at the university to pick a new VC.

The interviews were marred by claims of bribery and tribal wars by some panellists to allegedly block Professor Ayiro from taking over as VC.

Some of those on the interview panel were accused of deliberately down marking Professor Ayiro who was ranked second after Professor Isaac Kosgey.

“Professor Ayiro’s work is evident and CS Matiangi should be guided by wisdom to pick the best person to run Moi University”, said UASU Secretary at the University Professor Jack Abok.
