Teachers seeking registration with TSC must now produce certificate of good conduct.
The commission has also announced that new modules for renewal of teaching certificates will be effected January. The certificate is renewed after five years according to TSC Act.
TSC chair Lydia Nzomo said newly registered teachers must certify they pass integrity test.
“We need teachers who are trained, qualified and who poses professional qualification to be registered,” she said.
“But we are moving a step further. Apart from the professional qualification, teachers will be required to have certificate of good conduct and must meet the requirement of chapter six of the constitution.”
Nzomo spoke Monday in Mombasa during the 13th annual meet of primary heads.
She said it will be easy to induct teachers with integrity for capacity development.
The chair said section 35 of the TSC Act has made it mandatory for registered teachers to undertake career profession progression and professional development programmes.
“We don’t want you to be confused with irrelevant programmes. What the commission has done is to come up with systematic capacity building modules to be followed,” she said.
Nzomo said teachers should help to see new modules for renewal of teaching certificate is done smoothly.
“Even if you go to medical profession, legal and engineering, these groups have certificates that are renewed regularly just to ensure professionalism,” she said.
TSC has promised to make public institutions school of choice and attractive. Currently, many prefer privates because of their “special” treatment and “unique” services offered.
Nzomo said the fact that public schools performed better in 2017 KCPE than private was a proof they can dominate.
“All Singapore students attend public schools. Privates have been preserved for foreigners,” Nzomo said.
