Uhuru visits Matiba at Nairobi Hospital, wishes him God's healing

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday visited ailing former Opposition leader Kenneth Matiba.

"Visited my friend Kenneth Matiba, former Minister, who is convalescing

at a Nairobi hospital. May God heal you my friend," Uhuru wrote via Twitter.

Matiba, 85, was in August as compensation for detention and inhuman treatment he underwent at the hands of security agents.

The award was given by Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola who handled the case when he was still a High court judge.

He suffered a serious stroke on May 26, 1991, but remained in detention without medication for one week.

Matiba, who has been ailing for many years, developed respiratory difficulties and was immediately placed in the Intensive Care Unit at the Karen Hospital in 2015.

Matiba was arrested in May 1990 after he called for multiparty democracy.

While in prison, Matiba was refused medication and suffered a stroke, which affected half his body and incapacitated him for some time. Later, a multiparty system was installed and Matiba was released.

He unsuccessfully vied for President in 1992, coming second after Daniel Moi. Since then,his health has continued to fail and his vast business empire also crumbled.
