A protester was shot in his buttock in Kisumu as hundreds engaged riot police in running battles on Wednesday.

Officers fired teargas at NASA supporters who took to the streets to push for reforms at the IEBC.

The man was taken to

Nightingale hospital in Kondele, Kisumu town.

Audi Ogada,

Kisumu City Residents Association chairman, condemned police brutality saying they must stop using live bullets to disperse protesters.

"The person was shot in

Kondele area," he said.

There was heavy gunfire at Car Wash and Migosi estates and earlier in the day, crowds hurled stones at

Kondele police station, forcing police to respond.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o earlier led a peaceful march to IEBC's regional office.

OFFICERS CORNERS IN HOMA BAY

In Homa Bay town, a

police officer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being attacked by anti-IEBC protesters.

An irate crowd attacked the officer after finding him hiding between logs of timber that are on sale while demonstrators were dispersed.

His colleagues ran back to their station.

The officer, who was not identified, was hit with blunt objects and injured on the head and other parts of the body.

He sustained cuts to his head, inflicted by the crowd that eventually listened to his pleas in Dholuo.

"I'm your fellow tribesman and a NASA supporter. Please do not kill me because I'm just doing my work."

ODM youth leader Collins Kalee

intervened and rescued him.

"The police officer was crying that he was being killed yet he is a Luo. I had to intervene....I pleaded with the angry youths and prevented further damage."

Speaking to journalists, Kalee said the officer bled profusely and would have died had he not been treated shortly after the rescue.

Kalee said the residents took the officer's gun.

"They first deprived him of the gun before landing on him with objects. I had to plead with them to save his life."

Earlier, another police officer was assaulted within the town after protesters cornered him during the protests.

They accused him of setting a vehicle spare parts shop along Garage road on fire.

County police commander Marius Tum did not comment immediately as he was in a meeting.

"I will talk to you later," Tum said.
