Leaders in Kisii region are mourning ex-MP Joel Onyancha who died on Wednesday night at Aga Khan hospital, Nairobi.

The former Bomachoge Borabu MP died shortly after his family rushed him there after he collapsed.

Former Senator Chris Obure said Onyancha was watching the Supreme Court judgement when he collapsed.

"I spoke with him on phone for a long time. He was jovial and told me he was in the house following the judgement on TV and therefore we could not meet as earlier planned," Obure told The Star on phone.

Governor James Ongwae said Onyancha's death is a big blow to Jubilee.

"Kisii has lost a great leader whose contribution to the development of Bomachoge and Gusii in general will be greatly missed," the Governor said in his condolence message.

Woman representative Janet Ong'era described the late politician as a fair player.

"Even though we were on opposing political sides, Onyancha played by the rules of the game. I send my deepest condolences to the family and the people of Bomachoge."

The former lawmaker served as assistant minister for Sports and Culture from 2005 to 2008.

Onyancha served as Bomachoge MP between 2002 and 2007 on a Ford People ticket and Bomachoge Borabu MP from 2013 to 2017 on a TNA ticket.

He lost his seat in the August 8 polls to Zadoc Ogutu, an independent candidate, and was pursuing a petition challenging the results.

Like the proverbial cat with nine lives, the ex-MP had a jinxed political career but always swam-even against the tides-to reinvent himself.

Onyancha's victory in 2007 was short-lived as the High Court nullified the election in December 2008 forcing a by-election in which he lost to ODM's Simon Ogari.

After the constituency was sub-dived following a successful boundaries review, the ex-high school principal bounced back in the 2013 general elections and was elected as Bomachoge Borabu MP on a URP ticket.

Bomachoge Borabu would become President Uhuru Kenyatta's most loyal and trusted constituency in Kisii county.

But Onyancha lost his seat again in October 2013 when the High Court nullified his election and ordered a by-election, which he won on a TNA ticket despite a strong ODM wave that barreled the region.
