The roads authority has urged motorists to exercise caution, especially after flooding, as heavy rains pound several parts of the country.

The Kenya National Highways Authority singled out Mombasa-Kilifi-Malindi highway where Mbogolo Bridge near Kilifi town was submerged.

Drivers could not use the bridge for more than two hours on Monday as most parts of its embankment were eaten up by raging waters from Mbogolo River.

A team from the authority and police have diverted all

heavy commercial trucks to Mavueni-Kaloleni road due to the state of the bridge.

“Take extreme caution on the road and watch out for possible flooding as several areas of the country continue to receive intensified downpours,” Charles Njogu,

KeNHA Corporate affairs manager,

said in a statement on Tuesday.

“KeNHA engineers have noticed some slight undermining on the upstream but this cannot be fully established until the water subsides fully. KeNHA urges all motorists to be on high alert, and not to attempt to cross any bridges or sections of the road that are overstepped by water."

The authority is

expected to make a full assessment of the bridge once the water subsides.

Currently only light, vehicles are allowed past the bridge.

The bridge last collapsed El Nino rains

in 1997.

Many parts of the coast region have experienced heavy downpour since Sunday.
