An elderly woman was on Thursday charged with fraudulently obtaining Sh4 million from a Nairobi businessman.

Nancy Wanjiku, 65, allegedly obtained the money from Nicholas Kanyi by pretending she could sell him a piece of land in Ruiru.

The court was told she committed the offences between February 23 and March 7 at the Nairobi city centre.

Wanjiku was also charged that on unknown dates and place she forged a title deed for the piece of land with the intention of committing fraud.

She was accused of selling the land reportedly owned by Felistas Njenga.

Wanjiku was further charged with forging a title deed and claiming that it was from the National Lands Commission.

She was also charged with two counts of uttering the forged title deed and conspiring to obtain money by false pretenses.

According to the prosecution, the complainant was in his office when a man named Simon informed him of an advert on the property.

Simon said his mother, who is the accused person, was sick and that they needed to sell part of the land to take her to hospital.

Police said Kanyi became interested in the land as it was situated at a good place and they agreed to meet at their home.

The complainant managed to meet the accused person who was referred to by her alleged son as Teresa.

They discussed and agreed to deposit Sh1.5 million to start the process.

Kanyi told police everything went on well but that after paying the Sh4 million, the suspect and her accomplices went missing.

The complainant later discovered he had been given a fake title deed and that everything concerning the deal was false.

He reported the matter to police leading to the arrest of the accused.

Wanjiku denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Angelo Kithinji.

She was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000 or a bond of Sh1 million. The case will be heard on August 15.
