At least 4.5 million children under five years are targetted for polio vaccines in 22 counties this week.

The Sh300 million drive started on Saturday and ends on Wednesday.

Health CS Cleopa Mailu says if no case is reported by the end of this year, then Kenya can be considered polio-free. Kenya races to be certified polio-free next year. However, the World Health Organisation only certifies a region as a whole after all its countries sustain no new transmissions for three years.

Vaccination teams are moving from house to house, giving the vaccines in Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Garissa and Homa Bay. They are also visiting homes in Isiolo, Kakamega, Kisumu, Lamu, Mandera, Marsabit, Nairobi, Nandi, Samburu and Siaya.
