Many Americans have asked outgoing President Barack Obama not to leave them as the reality of a Donald Trump leadership sinks in.

US citizens have been expressing their fears after Trump's shock-win over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the November 8 election.

But they have praised Obama for much, including demonstrating that he is a gentleman, policies that are not as "outrageous" as Trump's and his love for his wife Michelle.

Obama wished Michelle a happy birthday as she turned 53 on Tuesday.

"To the girl from the South Side who took on a role she didn't ask for and made it her own: Happy Birthday, Michelle. I love you," he wrote on Twitter.

The Obamas are set to leave the White House on January 20 when President-elect Donald Trump will officially take oath of office.

During his farewell speech in Chicago

last week, Obama broke to tears as he addressed First Lady Michelle Obama.

"Michelle – for the past twenty-five years, you’ve been not only my wife and mother of my children, but my best friend. You took on a role you didn’t ask for and made it your own with grace and with grit and with style and good humour," he told her.

God I wish Donald Trump would take a lesson on class from you before he takes office.

How can this be what is replacing you?

With a final call of his campaign mantra 'Yes We Can', Obama urged Americans on Tuesday to stand up for US values and reject discrimination as USA transitions to the Trump presidency.

In an emotional speech in which he thanked his family and declared his time as president the honor of his life, Obama gently prodded the public to embrace his vision of progress while repudiating some of the policies that Trump promoted during his campaign for the White House.

Trump proposed temporarily banning Muslims from entering the country, building a wall on the border with Mexico, upending a global deal to fight climate change and dismantling Obama's healthcare reform law.
