The High Court in Garissa yesterday stopped the Wajir county commissioner from gazetting or adopting the disputed Wajir North and Eldas constituency boundary.

Justice George Dulu granted the application after Wajir North residents went to court to stop its publication. In the application, the Ajuran community claim there is a deliberate attempt by the local administration to carve out part of Wajir North and give it to Eldas constituency, an area predominantly occupied by the Degodia.

The petitioners say they were the first settlers and welcomed the Degodia community due to their Islamic faith and desire for peaceful co-existence.

“Due to the continued and systematic marginalisation of the Ajuran clan, tension has seriously been building over a period of time. It was witnessed early last year in the clashes that caused losses to the communities,” lawyer Julius Anyoka said. The case will be heard on November 14.
