A Nyeri chief was on Tuesday charged with seeking and receiving a Sh17,000 bribe following his arrest by EACC detectives.

Samuel Nderitu of Kimathi location, Tetu, was held liable for three counts of soliciting benefits contrary to Section 39 (3) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

The court heard that on August 5 at Small Joint Bar in Nyeri town, the chief sought the amount from Daniel Mathenge as inducement to remove a restriction order placed on a parcel of land in Tetu-Thatha.

Nderitu allegedly committed the offence despite being a government officer under the Interior ministry.

He was further charged with receiving the amount from Mathenge as a bribe to withdraw the restriction order.

Nderitu denied the charges and was released on Sh200,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

Nyeri chief magistrate John Onyiengo said on Tuesday that the case will be mentioned on September 26.
