Faza island gets electricity 10 years after fire tragedy

More than 2,300 residents of Faza Island in Lamu can now enjoy electricity supply, more than 10 years after a fire tragedy plunged them into darkness.

The Rural Electrification Authority is expected to hand over the Sh250 million

project to Kenya Power on Tuesday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had issued a two-month ultimatum for Kenya Power to ensure electricity supply on the island.

The resident were left homeless after the fire on September 5, 2005.

During retired president Mwai Kibaki's regime about Sh6 million was raised to rebuild the Island.

Mombasa business mogul Ali Punjani contributed Sh2.5 million.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, who was then Kisauni MP, gave Sh1 million while various ministries contributed between Sh100,000 and Sh5 million.

The President’s office gave Sh5.5 million.

Uhuru is expected to officiate the project later in August after opening the Mombasa Agricultural Society of Kenya show.

Munyu said:

"We will be providing another generator in due coarse and every individual will be happy."

Lamu East MP Sharif Athman added that locals should apply for connections.

He noted the supply will improve their lives, businesses, investments especially by foreigners, and boost tourism and infrastructure.
