A mother in Embu town set herself and her daughter (9) and son (3) ablaze for unknown reasons on Tuesday morning.

35-year old Caroline Wanjiru is reported to have doused herself and her two children with petrol after locking all the doors and windows to her house.

The incident took place in Majimbo village in Embu West Sub County.

Wanjiru is said to have sent a boda boda rider for the petrol that she was to use before locking all the possible entrance and setting her house ablaze.

Fire brigades officers, who arrived the scene shortly after, managed to access the room where the woman and the children died. The officers came across a suicide note the woman addressed to her husband.

The note reportedly informed Wanjiru's husband to have a nice time as she and her children left for a never-to-return journey

Embu West police boss Francis Sang said neighbors saw smoke billowing from the house and that their efforts to try gain access to the house were futile, so they decided to break inside.

Sang added that the woman and her two children were burned beyond recognition in one of the rooms upstairs.

The police boss says only the rooms upstairs were burned thanks to efforts by the residents and the fire brigades to control the fire before it could spread to others areas.

Sang said that the bodies of the deceased were moved to Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary, as investigations to determine what happened commenced.

Neighbours said the woman was in a jovial mood in the recent days and they had not seen any sign of troubles.

Ernest Mugambi, a nephew to the deceased woman said that it was tragic for the family and relatives to lose three members of the family at the same time.

Mugambi said that they were still in shock over what could have transpired leading to the death of the three as the couple had not quarrelled in recent past.
