High Court judge Isaac Lenaola yesterday dismissed a compensation claim by six Freedom Corner mothers who sued the state for police brutality and torture suffered 20 years ago. He said they did not produce medical evidence and they brought the matter before court 20 years late. The suit was filed by former Subukia MP Koigi wa Wamwere on behalf of the mothers. The women include Koigi’s mother Monica Wangu and lawyer Gitau Mwara’s mother Eunice. Wangu and Priscilla Kimani told the court they were arrested and tortured by police at Freedom Corner in Uhuru Park and All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi while clamouring for the release of their political detainee sons. Other complainants were Alice Wambui, Gabriel Kiarie, John Njoroge, Lucy Kimani, and Esther Gichimu. They said they will appeal.
