Mombasa Education executive Tendai Mtana is reportedly being groomed by Governor Hassan Joho to take over as the senator, sources within Joho’s political circles have told the Star.
Insiders said this follows the falling out between Joho and Senator Hassan Omar.
Omar, who has declared interest in the governor’s seat, has turned into a critic of Joho.
Earlier this week, he said the Sh200 billion redevelopment of 12 estates should be suspended as residents were not consulted.
Businessman Suleiman Shahbal and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti have also opposed the project.
The two are also eying the governor’s post. Shabhal lost to Joho in 2013.
Mtana, who spoke to the Star on phone, fell short confirming the reports, saying it is too early to announce his interest.
“When the time comes to make such an announcement, I will surely do it. But currently, let me concentrate on my duties to serve Mombasa residents,” he said.
He said Mombasa needs sober leadership from people who can push the county development agenda forward.
Mtana vied for governor in 2013 but lost.
Omar is accused of not championing development agenda.
He has severally said MCAs are acting as the “governor's rubber stamp” by passing every bill from the executive.
