Governor Evans Kidero has ordered the Nairobi environment team to clear uncollected garbage in the next three days following complaints by the public.

Kidero said the team has been cleaning various parts of the city in a project aimed at addressing collection and management challenges.

His directive on Tuesday also followed a threat by Eastleigh business owners and landlords to boycott levies including

licence fees and land rates over the lack of basic services.

He charged

Environment executive Evans Ondieki and chief officer Leah Oyake with the task, saying he is also "disturbed".

But Kidero said

residents who carelessly dump waste have hampered its collection and management, noting "solid waste management is a major challenge in African cities".

“I urge all Nairobi residents to dispose solid waste responsibly as we seek to make Nairobi the shining city in the sun you know it can be," he said.

The Governor noted that

the more than three million residents of the county generate over 2,000 metric tons of waste on a daily basis.

"This figure is expected to grow to 3,900 tonnes by 2030 in the wake of increased urbanisation," he said in a post on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

Underlining that proper infrastructure is required, Kidero said his mandate was "to bring sanity to the city’s challenges" but that issues arising from 50 years of neglect will take time to solve.

"But I can assure you that it will be done," he said.
