Thirteen people drowned in Lake Victoria in Entebbe, Uganda, while celebrating Christmas at the weekend.

reported that police said the bodies were recovered along shores near the airport and on beaches on Monday.

“We got a report of a person who had gone missing after he had gone to the beach with his friends. We discovered he was one of the deceased,” Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Patrick Onyango was reported as saying.

A manager of the Sports Beach said he was celebrating Christmas festivities without mishaps when his employees reported seeing bodies floating on the water.

"We have received reports that most of the deceased were drunk when they drowned," Joseph Omuna said.

Police and Uganda People's Defence Force marines had asked revelers to leave the beaches after the weather changed on Saturday.

Visitors to the beaches said some declined to leave, fearing arrest for drinking while in the water.

Among eight identified victims are Brian Nsubuga of Kayunga, Allan Mubiru of Natete and Abubaker Ssensonyia of Kawempe Kigagga Zone.

The others are Haruna Mubiru, Sula Kato, Arafat Kabonge and Richard Senyondo.
