A leading manufacturer in Nyanza has been accused of violating health and environmental requirements.
Nyando-based Agro Chemical and Food Company has been sued by the Water Resources Management Authority.
Chief executive Ashok Agrawal is said to have permitted waste from the plant to flow into the Nyando River and polluting it.
Agrawal wrote to the authority CEO Phillip Olum, saying the company has put in place initiatives to stop the pollution.
“The company has an effluent treatment plant that is already under implementation,” Agrawal said
This year, the company allocated about 25 per cent of capital expenditure to improveme the effluent treatment plant, he said.
Currently, the recurrent budget is Sh10 million.
A tender notice to improve the treatment plan was published on July 13, the letter says.
Agriculture Principal Secretary Sicily Kariuki and company chairman Andrew Tuimur are copied in the letter.
The water management authority has sought orders to have directors take a plea.
