The Kenya Ferry Services wants to raise the charge for vehicles using the ferry.

The managing director says this is necessary due to the increased cost of fuel and the number of pedestrians.

Musa Hassan said the increment will cushion the Sh200 million deficits the parastatal has.

He was speaking yesterday during the Consultative Forum on Review of the Vehicular Rates in Likoni, Mombasa.

With the proposed new charges, 3.5 and 6 metre long cars will pay Sh150 and Sh180 up from the current Sh90 and Sh120 respectively.

Landrovers will pay Sh300 from the current Sh200.

Pickups will pay Sh180 which is Sh60 more than the current charges.

Towing charges for cars with between 3.5m and 6m long will increase by Sh110 from Sh240 if the new charges are enacted.

Trucks which are 17m long will be towed at Sh2,000, up from Sh1,320.

Trucks 6m, 7m and 8m long will pay Sh450, Sh700 and Sh800.

Currently they are paying Sh300, Sh460 and Sh550 respectively.

The 9m, 10m, 11m and 12m long vehicles will pay Sh1,000, Sh1,050, Sh1,250 and Sh1,400.

The current rates are Sh660, Sh700, Sh820 and Sh940 respectively.

Tariffs for trucks 13m and 14m long are expected to rise by Sh500 and Sh570 respectively.
