Man wants to plant miraa in State House

Meru's miraa 'ambassador' Rajesh Hirani has started a campaign to convince President Uhuru Kenyatta to plant at least two miraa trees in State House garden. The self-appointed miraa envoy said the crop is known as green gold and should be honoured. Planting miraa in the State House garden would be a sign that the President respects growers, Hirani said.

He spoke to the Star on Saturday in Meru town.

Hirani is also lobbying to have all restaurants and hotels designate sections for miraa chewers.

He said the consumers of miraa have been lobbying for its recognition in the global market.

In June last year exports of miraa to the UK were banned.

Hirani said most farmers and businessmen who depended on the crop for their livelihoods no longer have markets.

He said he has met with all kinds of miraa chewers of all kinds.

Hirani said he was given the informal title of ambassador for his passion and fight for awareness of miraa as a cash crop.
