A leaders’ meeting expected to resolve a border dispute between Kajiado and Makueni on Thursday is bound to fail if the National Land Commission officials do not attend, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has said.

He said he has received an invitation from Kajiado Governor David Nkedianye to attend the meeting in Emali, but he will only attend if officials from NLC and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will be in the meeting.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and county MPs and MCAs are expected to attend.

Nkedianye told the Star from Italy he will attend the “vital and historic meeting”.

Kibwana could not be reached as his mobile phone was switched off.

Kajiado leaders are against the hiving of 800 metres of land from the railway line in Emali town to be handed over to Makueni.

This was informed by the Districts and Provinces Act (1992) and which has been adopted as an electoral boundary by IEBC.

The Maasai community claim they were not consulted when the Act was drawn and say the railway line should remain the boundary.

Kilonzo and the Emali Residents’ Association were briefed by IEBC chairman Issack Hassan in February that the border between Kajiado and Makueni West constituency in Emali town is 800 metres.

“What I want to tell the people of Kajiado is that I did not say the border is not the railway line. Kajiado leaders are aware who said that,” Kilonzo said last week.
