THE National Transport and Safety Authority has launched strict rules for boda bodas, including a Sh20,000 fine for those found breaking the law.
Riders unable to pay the fine will serve prison sentences not exceeding six months.
“Children less than 13 years must wear helmets designed for children and must sit between the rider and passenger," NTSA director general Francis Meja said.
He was speaking at the Serena Hotel after the launch of the Motorcycle Assemblers Association of Kenya.
He said the new regulations require both the rider and passenger to wear helmets and reflective vests.
These should be inscribed with the registration number of the motor cycle.
The riders must have PSV insurance, valid driving licence and a minimum third-party insurance, Meja said.
He said all the riders will have to be licensed by NTSA before any operation.
Meja said the authority is in consultations with county governments to designate specific areas and hours of operation.
This will reduce the generalisation of boda boda riders in thuggery incidents, he said.
Riders are expected to only carry one passenger at a time and no carrying of load and passenger at the same time.
Carriage of loads is restricted to 15cm width beyond the handle bars and a height of 2m from the ground.
