A police officer accused of using bedsheets that are part of evidence in a defilement case as curtains has been released after spending one week at teh Lang'ata Womens' Prison.

Catherine Nthenya had been accused of obstructing justice by failing to present the bedsheets as evidence.

Nairobi senior resident magistrate Emilly Nyongesa had ordered her arrest.

Nyongesa said the officer admitted in court that she did not take the exhibits to the government chemistry for analysis, which delayed the case.

The prosecution said the officer was interfering with the investigation.

"This is a serious affence and if found guilty you are capable of five years imprisonment", Nyongesa said in her ruling.

She however said that one week in custody was a lesson and a warning to Nthenya.

Nyongesa urged the officer to take her work seriously.

Nthenya was arrested on March 3 for failing to bring to court bedsheets filed as exhibits in the case where Simon Thuo is charged with defiling a 10-year-old girl in 2010.

The prosecution has a new investigating officer and the hearing was adjourned to April 10.
