A former assistant chief succumbed to injuries at Chuka hospital following a dispute over land in Chuka Igambangombe constituency.

The former chief, identified as Patrick Riungu, died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Hospital Superintendent Elijah Kameti said two others are being treated with serious injuries.

“One patient died upon arrival at the hospital while one was treated and discharged two others that have serious head injuries are still admitted at our hospital. They are out of danger,” said Kameti.

A resident said that a gang of about 40 people armed with crude weapons attacked the residents accusing them of encroaching on the land.

“We had been called to a meeting on the land demarcation, and saw a group of people approaching armed with pangas we scattered for safety,” said M’Mbita Nthumbi.

Deputy Commissioner George Otieno explained that 24 elders had been elected to help in adjudication, under direction from the Ministry.

“It is unfortunate the elders chosen from Maara decided to start adjudication claiming the area was their ancestral land, they did not inform the District commissioner as they carried out the process. That is when residents from Mutino stormed in and trouble started,” Otieno said.

Many residents in the area have not been issued with title deeds, which lies at the border of Maara and Chuka Igambangombe constituencies.

Police officers have been deployed to
