Lang'ata Road primary school pupils will be counselled to help them cope with trauma caused by the chaotic protest on Monday.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said his ministry will assign a team of professionals to the pupils.

Speaking at the school on Wednesday, Kipsang urged the construction of a perimeter wall around the school to prevent encroachment.

Assistant Counselling Services director Ruth Nyambura said the mayhem during the protest was unhealthy for the children.

"The children must have suffered psychological shock by witnessing and being part of the violent confrontation," Nyambura said

"The children are likely to have nightmares and loss of appetite and thus need psychological debriefing to overcome the experience."

Nyambura noted that those who witness or take part in terrifying events suffer post-traumatic stress disorders, and that counselling helps them.

During the protest against the grabbing of a playground, police used tear gas to disperse pupils, school managers, parents and activists.

Several leaders have condemned the act, saying the officers who fired the tear gas and the land grabbers must he held accountable.
