KIAMBU Governor William Kabogo yesterday closed a primary school in Thika after an outcry from parents that the facility had been privatised.
Hired teachers were made to leave their work as pupils who were in classes were advised to go back to the hostels.
Parents said Madaraka Primary School has been a public institution since 1958 but was privatised during the December holiday by The Assumption Sisters, Nairobi.
Kabogo ordered school administrator Rosemary Ngumu to close the institution until the school’s management, parents and the county government meet.
“Many pupils who have been in this school and were here last term and are now locked out, yet they have a right to access education,” Kabogo said.
He criticised Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi for authorising the change of status of the school.
Parent Lucy Waithera told the Star her four children at the school were locked out when the school opened on January 5.
