The government is profiling assets of 10 people who the US government has linked to drug trafficking. The Committee on National Security chairman Asman Kamama yesterday told the National Assembly police investigations have not linked the “prominent Kenyans” with the crime.

He said police officers have recommended farther investigations covering the 10 individuals, which includes profiling their assets. However, MPs questioned the rationale behind the profiling of the assets when police investigations have exonerated four of the 10 suspects.

Suba MP John Mbadi challenged the committee to summon senior security officials to explain who they are investing and what they are profiling.

“The national security committee should summon the cabinet secretary, the attorney general, public prosecutor and the CID director to explain the status of the investigations,” he said.

Kitui Central MP Benson Mulu criticised the slow investigations in the matter that started in 2001. “The investigations have taken too long. Can the process be expedited so that these Kenyans get justice?” he said.

Kitutu Masaba Mp Timothy Bosire demanded the committee moves with speed to bring the whole matter to and end. Kamama told the House that the police report was not specific on who is responsible and recommended further investigations and profiling of the suspects.

He said the details of the report do not raise sustain prosecution of the four in their alleged role in drug trafficking. Former Internal security minister George Saitoti named governors Ali Hassan Joho and William Kabogo, Senator Mike Sonko Mbuvi and former Kilome MP Harun Mwau as among the US government had linked to drugs.
