AP officer held over kidnap plot

AP police officer has been arrested in Nairobi over a plot to kidnap a woman. Caporal Dishon Mukunga Ndirangu was arrested yesterday in Huruma estate by officers from the Special Crime Prevention Unit who accused him of colluding with criminals.

Police recovered two AP uniforms including a jacket and a pair of shirts, two pairs of police trousers, police boots and a radio phone. Police questioned Ndirangu

over the kidnap of an assistant chief in Solio, Nyeri county. He was travelling in a Toyota IST together with three other men believed to be criminals.

The arrested men were identified as John Gikonyo Chege, Anthony Gitau and Isaac Ngula. It emerged that Ndirangu was transferred from Nairobi to Wajir in June but failed to report to his new station.

His seniors did not know that he had declined to report to the new station until yesterday when he was arrested. Head of Special Crime Prevention Unit Noah Katumo said a suspect who was in a separate car and was armed with a pistol escaped.The arrest comes a day after it emerged that police officers are linked to major crime incidents in the city.

AP spokesman Masoud Mwinyi said the police have also opened internal investigations to establish how Ndirangu managed to stay out of job for five months without being noticed by his seniors.
