
President William Ruto put on his football boots as he joined the Harambee Stars at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, ahead of their opening clash in the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).
In a show of solidarity and national pride, the President took to the pitch to kick a ball, rallying Kenyans to unite behind the national team as they embark on their continental campaign.
“CHAN 2024 is here, and Harambee Stars are ready to shine.
Let us come together and support our boys as they fight for glory,” Ruto said
during his visit.
“When the national team wins, Kenya wins.”

Harambee Stars begin their Group A journey this Sunday in a high-stakes encounter against two-time CHAN champions, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The match, set to be played at Kasarani Stadium, marks Kenya’s long-awaited return to the continental football stage.

The task is formidable, but the mood in the Kenyan camp has been buoyed by overwhelming public support and record-breaking financial incentives.

Ruto has promised Sh600 million to the national team if they bring the trophy home.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has added to the momentum, pledging an additional Sh400 million.

“I want our team to clinch the trophy. If they do that, I will give them Sh400 million. Boys, you have Sh1 billion if you win,” said Sonko, who also encouraged other leaders to back the team in similar fashion.
