Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday led the groundbreaking for the construction of the first public hospital in Mlango Kubwa,  Mathare Constituency.

He was accompanied by the area MCA Susan Makungu.

Sakaja said the project is one of many initiatives the county aims to put up to enhance the county's Ward Development Programme.

"This is just one of the many ongoing projects across all the 85 wards after the enhancement of our Ward Development Programme to 23 million shillings per ward," the governor said.

Speaking during the groundbreaking of the project, Sakaja said the clinic would help residents who were being forced to seek the same services elsewhere.

"We are going to ensure that this hospital is well equipped with staff, equipment and drugs so that it can serve resident’s needs. The facility will also have a maternity wing where our women will be served during the treatment," he said.

About 7,000 people living at Mlango Kubwa are set to benefit from the health facility.
