The Judiciary on Monday launched the Nairobi Land Justice Working Group aimed at helping solve land disputes in the City County.
It acknowledges that land issues in Nairobi are emotive, compounded by cultural complexities and have persistent for a long time making them not only volatile but also politically sensitive.
The group's theme is "Expediting Land Justice through people people-centred approach".
The working group will be under the Environment and Land Court, which was established under the 2010 Constitution to address the challenges posed by rising number of land cases.
It has 23 members including ELC Judges Lucy Mbugua, Oguttu Mboya, David Mwangi and Judy Omange.
Other members are Advocate of the High Court Elizabeth Ndung'u, UN-FAO Programme Manager Land Governance Husna Mbarak, Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution Director Brian Ikol, Licensed and Surveyor Wilfred Kabue and DCI representative Hillary Mutai.
Principal State Counsel Njoroge Kamau, Nairobi CECM Built Environment and Urban Planning Gathuita Mwangi, IDLO Kenya Gender Specialist Sheila Mogeni, ELC Registrar Rose Makungu, ELC Deputy Registrars Judith Omollo and Diana Orago, and EACC representative Patricia Chebet are also among the members of the group.
Others appointed are Principal Magistrate Sammy Opande, Deputy County Commissioner - Starehe John Kisang, NCAJ representative Slyvia Yiantet, Fredrick Otieno of Legal Resources Foundation, Nairobi Land Registrars George Gitonga and Cecilia Kanyoni, and Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops rep Wanjala Nasimiyu.
