Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Friday officially opened the Agricultural Society of Kenya Kisumu Regional Show at Mamboleo grounds.
During the event, he toured various stalls including the agricultural stand and the Kenya National Highways stand.
In his address to attendees, he said the government was committed to ensuring that Kenya was self-sustained in terms of food production.
He said over-reliance on food imports not only strain foreign exchange reserves, but also predisposes the country to food insecurity.
"We have no option but to urgently become self-reliant by increasing agricultural production," he insisted.
Mudavadi said national and county governments were collaborating to support farmers with high-yielding seed varieties, increasing mechanisation, control of pests and strengthening farmers' cooperatives.
Present were National ASK chairperson Annabel Kiriinya and Kisumu ASK chairperson George Ong'udi.
