Mama Rachel launches stitching project at Lang'ata prison to mark women's day

She said Cross-stitching has been a source of hope

First Lady of Kenya Mama Rachel Ruto on Wednesday launched the Carakana, whose name was changed from Cross Stitch International, at the Lang'ata Women's prison.

The Carakana project, according to Mama Rachel, has trained over 1500 women who have produced quality artefacts that have earned them Sh5.15 million.

Mama Rachel said Cross-stitching has been a source of hope for the women in prison. 

"It gives them dignity, a livelihood, respect from family, and a feeling of achievement," she added.

"This also contributes to mental well-being and is an indigenous skill that generates income as well as an improvement in cognitive, emotional, and social wellbeing."
