First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has called for urgent maternal health care in the ASAL areas, noting the rate of deaths during childbirth is high.
She spoke on Thursday during the commissioning of Segera Mission Hospital in Laikipia North.
"It is not fair for a mother to lose her life bringing another life. That is not God's will," she said.
She urged Governor Joshua Irungu to construct other hospitals and dispensaries across the county, to ensure that mothers and the entire community is taken care of.
Mama Rachel lauded the Hospital director and the stakeholders for taking the initiative.
"Congratulations to the Director and stakeholders... I have heard that this mission hospital covers a 72-km radius," she said.
Segera Mission hospital was started by the late Reverend Carlton Gleason in 2002 after a visit and seeing the needs of the people of Segera.
He started a medical clinic, a school, a feeding program for widows and orphans, and a mission outreach that includes a fully-fledged hospital.
In attendance were Governor Irungu, Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere, County Assembly Speaker Lantano Nabaala and Laikipia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri.
