Parents walk out of aborted AGM at Nyali School on Saturday

The board of management of the Nyali Primary School has denied reports that they want to extend their term in office by postponing the Annual General Meeting.

Benjamin Gitonga, the chairperson Mombasa Parents’ Club, which runs the school, said they could not conduct the election on Saturday due to a quorum hitch.

The club is made up of more than 1,200 paid up members and according to their constitution, the AGM can only take place if they have at least 411 parents present during the meeting.

On Saturday, the AGM was only attended by 213 parents.

“We were supposed to have an AGM  but we have not reached the quorum, so we are going to propose another day very soon," Gitonga said.

He said, reports that the current leadership wants to ‘overstay in office’ are unsubstantiated.

“That is not true at all. We do not intend to overstay. This is a members’ club and in every election, there is excitement. We are going to meet on Monday and set another date for the AGM,” he said.

Their term in office is supposed to end this April.

He said the AGM could not take place in the last two years because of the restrictions which came with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“However, we have been updating the parents on every decision that the board was making and they are up to date,” he said.

Jared Mzee, the chairperson of the Nyali School Elections Board, said they were ready for the polls, but that could not happen because of less numbers.

“We were ready to conduct the elections. We will have a Special General Meeting soon, which only requires 70 members, unlike an AGM that needs 411 members,” he said.

Michael Munyoki, who is vying for the Education Secretary position in the school’s board, said he was disappointed that the parents did not show up.

“Today, I was a bit disappointed because most of the members did not attend the meeting, which is fundamental," Munyoki said.

"The parents should come and be involved in the school management.."

Apart from the election of new board members, the parents of Nyali School were expected to get the accounts updated from the 2019, 2020 and 2021 academic year.
