Parents and students from different parts of the country flocked to bus stations on Tuesday as learners resumed school for the second term.
Bus stations were crowded with students as they tried to make their way to their respective schools.
Most matatu operators have hiked bus fare as a result of mass travelling of students and their guardians.
John Musyoki, a driver operating Nairobi Machakos town, said the bus fare had been doubled to meet the high cost of fuel as well as to compensate for off-peak days.
"We have even asked for support from other matatu saccos that operate within Nairobi to help cater for today's high demand," Musyoki said.
Learners are expected to stay in school for the next 11 weeks to finalise their second term.
Last week, the government announced it has released Sh17.5 billion to schools across the country as capitation for the second term.
Education CS Prof George Magoha said that Sh15.3 billion of the disbursement will go to secondary schools while Sh2.2 billion will be channelled to primary schools.
The CS warned headteachers against sending learners away because of school fees.
“The money has been released to them and no school has any justification to send children home," Magoha said.
