Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has backed a redesign plan by architect Wixx Mangutha for the sidewalks and service lanes of the capital to cater for small business traders.
This comes after Mangutha took to Twitter on Wednesday to suggest a redesigning plan to the city governor.
"For the longest time, hawkers in Nairobi have had a very difficult time trying to make a living, what if there was a different way?" Mangutha posed.
Sakaja wondered how Mangutha got to the wind of the redesign plans which he said is what he actually plans to do for the capital.
"How did you know? That’s the plan," Sakaja said.
Mangutha explained that hawkers in Nairobi have always had a difficult time trying to make a living while running away from the city council popularly known as Kanjos.
Thus the need to make their work easier.
He gave an illustration of the Thika Superhighway Roysambu service lane where the traders set up structures daily in order to sell their goods.
He suggested modern units be set in the service lane.
Mangutha illustrated modern units that can be folded when not in use saying they create a nice pop-up market.
"Taking a closer look at a unit, it can be folded when not in use, when in use, it can create a nice pop-up market," he said.
He added that food vendors can also be allocated space and gave an illustration of the modern stalls they can use.
