A Form four candidate who has been stuck in the hospital for three years attained impressive results in the 2022 KCSE exams.
Diba Matacho, 22, scored B- in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
He has been admitted at the Marsabit Referral Hospital since 2017 due to lung complication.
The Hospital CEO Liban Wako expressed his joy over the results.
"Matacho has done us proud and today as the Marsabit Referral Hospital fraternity, we join his family and friends in celebrating his good results," he said.
In an interview with Nation, Matacho thanked those who helped him during the illness.
"I can't thank all the well-wishers who came through for me when I was on my knees. I'm happy with what I scored though I expected to score a B plain or A," he said.
He scored C+ in English, Maths C, Physics B- (minus), Chemistry C+ (Plus), Kiswahili B (plain), CRE (D plain), and Business Studies B+ (plus).
Matacho further thanked Marsabit First Lady Alamitu Jattani for donating an oxygen cylinder to him.
He joined St Paul's Secondary School in Marsabit in 2014 but was forced to drop out in 2017 due to his condition.
His lungs collapsed five months into medication and he developed lung fibrosis, which forced him to depend on oxygen therapy.
Matacho attended several hospitals including Kirwa Mission Hospital in Meru.
From Kirwa, he was sent to Kenyatta National Hospital and finally to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for specialised treatment.
While there, he was introduced to strong drugs that cost Sh60,000 per month for three months.
The drugs helped improve his condition slightly, reducing his oxygen dependency from 24 hours to eight hours a day.
He, however, had to stop the medication since he could not afford the costs.
Matacho went back to Marsabit Referral Hospital for oxygen support.
The Hospital CEO said he was interested in pursuing a career in Medical Engineering to help other patients.
