Doctors council gets new CEO as Yumbya lands new job

Afya House veteran Dr David Kariuki has begun his term as CEO of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

Dr Kariuki, the former head of the department of Health Policy and Research Development at the Ministry of Health, took over from outgoing KMPDC boss Daniel Yumbya on September 28. But his term officially began October 1.

Yumbya retired from KMPDC mid-this year and was this week nominated as Machakos County health CEC. 

In July, Yumbya was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by Mount Kenya University during its 21st graduation ceremony for his exemplary service in the sector.

He was awarded a doctor of humane letters (honoris causa) for championing quality healthcare and patient safety.

His successor Dr Kariuki has worked at Afya House for many years and also served as the principal developer of the first roadmap towards Universal Health Coverage under the  "Big  Four" Government Agenda . In addition, he also led the Universal Health Coverage Policy efforts at the Ministry of Health.

"Dr Kariuki' s extensive healthcare management and policy development background together with his demonstrated acumen in financial and  human resource management, makes him an asset in enabling the Council deliver on its mandate of ensuring quality healthcare for all Kenyans," KMPDC chair Dr  Eva Njenga said.

Kariuki holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from Strathmore University, a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics & Gynecology and a Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery from the University of Nairobi.

He also holds a Diploma in Health Systems Management.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council is the regulator of the training, practice  and  licensing  of  medicine  and dentistry  and  healthcare  institutions.
