The government has warned boda boda operators against allowing themselves to be recruited by politicians and criminal groups to take part in violence, saying those involved in goonism will face the law.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo said a small number of rogue riders had damaged the reputation of the boda boda industry by participating in politically instigated violence, intimidation and destruction of property.

His warning came amid growing concern over the use of organised groups of young men, including some riding motorcycles, to disrupt protests, attack political opponents and intimidate members of the public during politically charged events.

In recent months, opposition leaders, civil society groups and human rights organisations have repeatedly accused politicians of hiring "goons" to infiltrate demonstrations or unleash violence against rivals.

The allegations have fuelled debate over political intolerance and the need to hold those financing such groups accountable.

Speaking during a meeting with boda boda operators and sector leaders in Vihiga county, Omollo said the government would not tolerate violence orchestrated for political purposes.

"No political interest is worth risking your life, your livelihood or your future. If there is a leader you support, support them peacefully. If there is a leader you do not support, continue with your work and your daily activities. Do not allow yourself to be used to commit acts of violence," he said.

Omollo urged riders to reject attempts by politicians and other actors to exploit unemployment among young people by recruiting them to cause chaos, attack opponents or destroy property during political activities.

The PS said the boda boda sector remains one of Kenya's most important economic drivers, despite isolated cases involving criminal elements.

He said the overwhelming majority of operators are hardworking, law-abiding citizens who earn an honest living while providing critical last-mile transport services linking communities to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.

The PS urged boda boda leaders to work closely with security agencies, chiefs, assistant chiefs and National Government Administrative Officers to identify and isolate criminals attempting to infiltrate the sector.

He said stronger collaboration between riders and security agencies would help curb insecurity, prevent crime and protect the industry's image.

Omollo also praised boda boda operators for supporting security efforts through information sharing and community vigilance.

He said their presence across villages and trading centres makes them valuable partners in maintaining public safety.

The PS further encouraged operators to take advantage of government programmes designed to improve livelihoods, including registration under the Social Health Authority, investments in education and infrastructure and initiatives aimed at modernising the boda boda sector.

He said the government is promoting electric motorcycles and affordable financing models to reduce operating costs and increase riders' earnings.

"The government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for the sector to thrive," he said.

Omollo said lasting economic development can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and stability, urging Kenyans to reject violence and focus on productive activities that strengthen communities.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring citizens can conduct their businesses without fear or intimidation.

The meeting brought together boda boda leaders, security officials, National Government Administrative Officers and other stakeholders from across Vihiga county.
