A family in Bungoma county is demanding justice after their son was allegedly shot by anti-riot police officers who were maintaining law and order in Bungoma town during last week countrywide anti-Finance Bill, 2024 protests.

Daniel Kakai, 17, was shot by one of the officers when he joined other protesters rejecting the Finance Bill.

He was a Form 2 student St Veronica at Siritanyi High School in Kanduyi constituency.

Josephine Kakai, the deceased’s sister, condemned police for lethal shooting and asked the relevant authorities to swing into action and ensure that justice prevails.

"Ipoa and other relevant authorities should help us in the investigations so that our brother gets justice,” Josephine said.

“My brother’s untimely death has left me in great shock. I did not imagine that my brother would be shot. He was a healthy boy until his death.”

On Tuesday last week, Kakai left home and told the family that he was going to shave his long hair in preparation for returning to school after a short half-term break. He did not return home.

“In the evening, we only received a call from a strange number informing that my brother had been shot in the protests in Bungoma town,” Josephine said.

Her brother was rescued by a Good Samaritan from the scene where he was shot and rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital. The doctors established that the gunshot has shattered a bone in one leg and he was booked for surgery the following day.

“After my brother came out of theatre he was okay and could speak. He narrated how the incident happened,” Josephine said.

She accused the police of using excessive force to disperse the protesters who were agitating for their rights.

The family is unable to raise funds to facilitate Kakai's funeral estimated to cost Sh400, 000.

Josephine described her brother as polite, hardworking and a dedicated student. The burial will be held on Saturday.
