MP Mugabe calls for bipartisan efforts to protect citizens from tax hikes

Lukuyani MP Innocent Mugabe has called on leaders to set aside their political affiliations and unite to protect citizens from rising taxes.

Mugabe urged lawmakers to collaborate and safeguard the public from the burdens imposed by the upcoming 2024/2025 financial bill.

The MP was speaking at Esiandumba secondary grounds during a church service.

"We had the Finance Bill 2023 /2024, proposals came and taxes were hicked. A similar thing might occur in this Financial Bill 2024/2025," Mugabe said.

The lawmaker said tax structures in Kenya have changed by increasing the Value-Added Tax on food commodities.

"As MPs, we need to shelve our people from these taxes by making amendments to that bill," he said.

Malava Mp Malulu Injendi, Nabii Nabwera Lugari and MP Dick Maungu the host among other leaders echoed his sentiments.

Suna West MP Peter Francis has said there is a need to amend the Finance Bill 2024/2025 to protect the poor.

He urged other MPs that once the bill is tabled in Parliament, a few things should be amended.

The lawmaker further urged the leaders to ensure devolved units have enough resources allocated to them.

"We also need to ensure counties have an increased allocation of resources to enable development in all devolved units," he said.
