Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa has donated foodstuffs to 20 families in Chesiywo village in Mt Elgon who were affected by mudslides and floods in the region.

On Tuesday, three children died and two were seriously injured during the night heavy downpour that was experienced in the region.

The two who were injured are still hospitalized at Bungoma County Referral Hospital (BCRH) for advanced medical monitoring.

In his address to the press in Mt Elgon, Barasa condoled with the family that lost three children after the house they were sleeping in collapsed and buried them alive.

The MP donated food items and blankets to the displaced families.

Barasa, who is eyeing the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, underscored the need for concerted efforts from all regional leaders to help address the landslide issues in the region.

“It cannot be that every year we talk about landslide and flood issues in Mt Elgon. We need to get a place so that all staying at a risk area migrate to safer grounds,” Barasa stated.

At the same time, Barasa announced Sh200,000 from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula towards the support of those affected by the landslide accident.

“National assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula gave me Sh200,000 to help clear hospital bills and purchase extra foodstuffs for the affected families,” he said.

The UDA MP, however, called on the government to help Mt Elgon residents purchase a piece of land so that those staying in risky areas move.

Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka in his address confirmed that the county is aware of the landslide accident saying that the disaster team is on top of the situation.
