Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli has faulted the county government of Bungoma for the ongoing demolitions to pave the way for the expansion of roads and decongest the town.

The Ford Kenya Senator termed the demolitions as inhumane.

Several traders are reportedly counting losses after their stalls and shops were flattened in two days of demolition.

However, Denson Barasa, acting Chief Officer, Lands, Urban Planning, Housing, and Municipalities told the Star on Tuesday that Bungoma is just taking advantage of the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations to clean up the town.

“Bungoma town is congested therefore we are taking advantage of the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations that we will host to clean up the town and demolish structures encroaching onto government land,” Barasa said.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka said development will always come with consequences asking those who have settled on public land to vacate, affirming that those whose structures were demolished will be offered an alternative settlement.

Senator Wakoli alleged that the county government did not involve everybody before the demolition exercise.

“The county government would have considered engaging all traders before demolishing their stalls, these are the people who contribute greatly to revenue collection and growth of Bungoma,” Wakoli said.

However, Wakoli added that the county government would have engaged with the business community, chamber of commerce and market chairpersons to sensitise them on the plans the government have in terms of upgrading the town.

He stated that the county would have been clear on who the sponsor of the projects is and what they intend to do, adding that the demolition exercise has resulted in unrest in Bungoma town.

“Developments must happen in Bungoma but now some of the CECs aren’t cooperative even getting them on the phone is a problem,” he said.

The senator is on Tuesday scheduled to host a consultative meeting with the Bungoma town business community to get public views on the issue.
